Who remembers Business In The Community?
You may have forgotten but in the UK there is a registered charity called Business In The Community. It describes itself as a membership organisation that “mobilises business for good”. It has significant resources – an income in the region of £23m and around 350 employees.
Seen as something as a talisman for the CSR agenda a few years ago it is noticeable that it has rather slipped off the radar screen. Perhaps this is because the adoption and understanding of CSR concepts has become more widespread. Consequently there is now rather less of a requirement for an organisation whose main reason for existing is to promote them to business.
It also describes itself as a campaigning body although it is really not known for doing this in the areas of its stated priorities. These are, apparently, “tackling climate change and developing the talent and skills of the existing and future workforce.”
It might be time for a rethink and possibly a new name. British business needs a champion that bangs the drum for its efforts to adopt CSR and its growing list of achievements in this area. Perhaps that could be a future role for a rebranded organisation.
